Programs in Forestry

Swedish forestry is a world model for the environmental management of forest resources. It is an integral part of the nation’s industrial base and a foundation for sound land stewardship. Across the country, forests are managed holistically with an approach that balances preservation and production. Forestry in Sweden means far more than simply cutting down trees. It embraces the broad concept of managing forests to create ecological balance in a sustainable manner. With its sustainable and innovative methods and technologies, the forestry sector in Sweden is a fantastic environment for trainees to learn the latest forest management techniques and technologies.

During traineeship or work, participants will thus employ sustainable harvesting techniques that ensure the health of forests for the long-term; master the science of forest regeneration to maintain forest biodiversity; and manage forest ecosystems in support of wildlife and ecosystem services. Sweden has developed environmental practices in its forestry, including the certification of forests to safeguard sustainability, and the production of renewable wood-based products that reduce the carbon footprint.

Timber harvesting planning and implementation, basic silvicultural practice, the application of conservation practices, and forest health monitoring are the hands-on experiences that trainees are sure to gain in the areas of operational forest management.

The commitment to sustainability and innovation that characterizes the forestry sector in Sweden creates a rich environment where international trainees or skilled workers can gain practical skills and knowledge that will prepare them to ply their trade in the forestry sector in Sweden or elsewhere internationally. The Swedish approach to forestry recognizes that the value of forests is not only economic, but that forests also play an important role in environmental conservation and social welfare.
